When we sold a pair of super hot gold vintage lamps to a talented wedding photographer in San Francisco, we could not wait to see how she was going to style them. Luckily for us, Michele Beckwith with Michele Beckwith Photography displayed them in her bedroom and was kind enough to give us a sneak peek into her home with these amazing style shots. We were floored at how stunning these lamps are styled in her space! Have a look at the photo collage below. She is our featured client in our customer spotlight and we were thrilled when she offered us a glimpse into her photography business and what inspires her to take such amazing photos.
Tell us a little about yourself … I'm a wedding photographer living in San Francisco. I just got married myself about a month ago to an English gentleman. My favorite color is sparkly.
My style is ... I'm a collector of pretty things. I tend to get big ticket items that are neutral and then accent them with pops of color. I believe that one's taste is always evolving, so I'm always keeping an eye out for found items on Etsy or HomeGoods. I spent a lot of time finding objects and décor for our wedding. A requirement of everything I purchased was that we could display in our home afterwards. Therefore, it had to reflect “us” and our style. I love to rearrange objects we've collected in the flat, just to liven things up. The husband is always coming home to a restyled living room! I love the color white and the way it reflects beautiful light back into an environment, so I have a lot of white everywhere. White dishes, linens, walls...however I'm also obsessed with gold right now! My style is reflected in my fashion choices as well. I invest in key pieces that fit well, but then tend to collect less expensive accessories as those can be swapped out easily as trends come and go. I love creating layered looks. From my photographer background, I know that the camera loves layers and details. It creates more interest and depth to a photo, so I apply that to both my home and my wardrobe.
How did you discover your style? Any influences? It took me ages to discover my style. I just used to buy things I liked in the moment and kept everything I had collected over years, but after moving to the city where space is at a premium, I was forced to reevaluate my belongings. I decided to start with a clean slate when I moved in with my husband. He has impeccable fashion taste, so when we started dating the first thing I did was go shopping! Since then I've paid more attention to honing my own personal style and tastes. I joined Pinterest sometime last year and was able to start a collection of all my favorite images in one place. That has definitely helped me figure out what I was drawn to and definitely helped to define my own style. I'm even more selective about purchases now that we are preparing to buy our first home. I want classic key items that will look fab in our new place!
My favorite era ... I don't really stick to one era, but I do tend to stick with items with clean lines. Too much clutter makes me crazy!
Do you have a favorite home magazine or decor style books that speak to your aesthetic? Anthology magazine makes me swoon every time I flip through it. Past issues of Domino magazine as well. Nowadays I'm scrolling through the Apartment 34 blog and Pinterest for inspiration!
Do you have a board on Pinterest designated for the home? When you look at the entire board do you see an aesthetic that defines you from everything you've pinned? Yes! Pinterest is a big part of making decorating decisions. It was pinning that helped me identify what my eyes were drawn to. Right now I have two boards for the home. One of them is designated soley to kitchens and baths. I have so many pins I may need to break it down by room now! I tend to pick photos of rooms full of natural light and white walls that are made interesting with pops of color in the textiles.
Are you a collector of anything particular? Right now I'm collecting vintage trophies for a photoshoot (but secretly using that as an excuse so I can display them afterwards on my bookshelf!). I also collect cookbooks and scarves. They now rival my shoe collection.
If you could wish for anything vintage, what would be your ideal pieces? I would love to collect old film cameras! I just love how beautiful and unique the designs are. I also want to collect more vintage serveware and dishes. I love cooking for others and having a fabulous collection of vintage bowls, platters and even barware would be fabulous for mixing up different looks when entertaining. Speaking of entertaining, I need a designated bar cart in my life.
How do you define or imagine the perfect home? When I first moved to San Francisco, I lived in an old Victorian flat from the 1880's. I loved the glass doorknobs, the built-in cabinetry and the gorgeous fireplace mantle. Now that we are house hunting, I'm looking for a place that has good bones. I don't want someplace that has been recently updated, so that the foodie in me can create my dream kitchen and open up the floor plan for entertaining and window light. Another must is a little plot of land. I would love to have a vegetable and cut flower garden. And chickens. I really, really want chickens.
How did you discover AnthologyHouse? Searching around on Etsy! I was looking for an awesome pair of vintage gold lamps for our nightstands.
What's next on the horizon for Michele Beckwith Photography? Right now I'm totally focused on my awesome couples that have booked me to capture their weddings this year. I'm also in love with film and am incorporating that love as much as I can into my wedding work. So far I'm loving the results! A rebrand and website makeover are coming this Fall 2013 to showcase the new direction my art is taking.
