The New Vintage Bathroom

Alyse Hufford

When we bought our 1920's craftsman, we got a house with great bones but most of the old charm and character you expect to find in a craftsman had been removed.  We were faced with a small kitchen that had been remodeled in the 1960's, an unfinished basement with a creepy dungeon-like bathroom, at least 5 layers of wallpaper on every wall and crevice of the house, popcorn ceilings and oh yeah...a pink and mauve tiled bathroom.

Just about everything in the bath was original with the exception of the toilet.  While we loved the floor, it was in pretty bad shape.  We were faced with what most people in Seattle have to contend with - a small outdated bathroom that needed a complete overhaul.

We decided to change the footprint of the room by knocking out the shared wall of our guest room closet so we could carve out a vanity.  We kept the original tub (had it resurfaced) and door (just had to repaint) but everything else had to go.

Overall we are very pleased with our remodel and after living with the new bath for almost 3 years, there isn't too much we would change.  Our favorite things about the bathroom are the radiant floor heating (it's so nice to step onto warm tile in the Winter months) and carrara marble vanity top.  I think the only thing we would change is going with black grout over the lighter grey but other than that, we can't complain about our little bath.
